Cornea

Cornea Information

Cornea treatments range from non-invasive methods like special contact lenses (RGP, scleral) and medicated eye drops (antibiotics, steroids) for infections/inflammation, to procedures like Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) to strengthen the cornea in keratoconus, and advanced surgeries like lamellar or full-thickness corneal transplants (PK, DSEK/DMEK) for severe damage or thinning. All are aimed at restoring clear vision by correcting shape or replacing diseased tissue. Treatment depends on the underlying condition, such as infections, degenerations, or trauma, with early intervention crucial.

Non-Surgical Treatments

• Medications : Antibiotic, antiviral, or antifungal drops for infections; steroids for inflammation.

• Specialty Contact Lenses : Rigid Gas Permeable (RGP) or scleral lenses reshape the cornea for better vision in keratoconus and irregular astigmatism.

• Bandage Lenses/Patches : Protect the cornea while it heals from abrasions or ulcers.

Procedures for Keratoconus & Strengthening

• Corneal Cross-Linking (CXL) : Riboflavin drops + UV light to stiffen and strengthen the cornea, halting progression.

• Intracorneal Ring Segments (INTACS) : Small rings implanted to flatten the corneal surface.

Surgical Treatments (Keratoplasty)

• Penetrating Keratoplasty (PK) : Full-thickness transplant of donor tissue for extensive scarring or thinning.

• Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK/DMEK) : Replaces only the damaged inner layer (endothelium) for conditions like Fuchs' dystrophy, with faster recovery.

• Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) : Laser removes surface irregularities or scarring.

Other Options

• Custom Tissue Implants (CATAC) : Reshapes the cornea using laser-cut tissue.

• Tarsorrhaphy : Partially closing the eyelid to protect the cornea during healing.

Consultant your Eye Doctor (ophthalmologist) for proper diagnosis, as untreated conditions can lead to significant vision loss.
